10 Benefits of Working With a Freelancer vs a Marketing Agency

10 Benefits of Working With a Freelancer vs a Marketing Agency

Sep 11, 2025 | Marketing Tips for Your Business |

For any business, big or small, when it comes to outsourcing your marketing, you’re often faced with the decision of hiring a freelancer vs a marketing agency.

At first glance, a marketing agency might seem like the obvious choice as they’ve got a whole team, funky offices and the kind of branding and client results that scream success. But here’s the thing – bigger doesn’t always mean better.

For many business owners, working with a freelancer (like me at Breezy Words) could be a better, more affordable choice for the stage of biz you’re at.

Here are 10 benefits of working with a freelancer versus a marketing agency:

1. Lower overheads and more affordable pricing.

Marketing agencies have to cover rent, utilities, admin staff and entire teams. Those costs are baked into their pricing and paid for by clients like you. This is fine if you have thousands to spend on outsourcing your marketing tasks.

But if you’d prefer experience and expertise at a more affordable price, then partnering with a freelance copywriter and marketing strategist like me could be the better option.

Freelancers can keep their running costs minimal. All I need is an internet connection, my trusty laptop and a few tools of the trade to get a project done. That means you’re not paying for my office space — you’re just paying for my expertise (plus a tasty treat or two for my furry work colleagues, Toby and Charlie).

2. Direct access with no middle person.

When you work with an agency, you’re often dealing with account managers or juniors who act as go-betweens. Your requests get filtered through layers of staff, and it can take days (or weeks) to get simple tasks actioned and completed. You often don’t know who is doing the work and may not even be able to talk to them directly.

When you hire a freelancer like me, you get to work with the same person from start to finish. There’s no middle person, no miscommunication and no confusion.

You’ll be fully aware of what’s happening at every stage of your project and feel comfortable adding your input and giving feedback. So the final results 100% feels like you and your business.

3. Consistency in brand voice and tone.

Agencies tend to allocate projects across wider teams, meaning different people may touch your copy, marketing or strategy. Each handoff can bring a new interpretation of your brand voice, and the end result can sometimes feel disjointed.

Freelancers handle your project from start to finish. From strategy through to execution, I craft every element, ensuring your brand voice stays consistent and your message remains seamless across channels. This continuity not only saves time, it also builds stronger recognition and trust with your audience.

4. Speed and adaptability.

Need a project turned around quickly? This is where you really notice the difference between a freelancer vs a marketing agency. Agencies often have long onboarding processes with multiple levels of approval before you can even start.

Freelance marketers can move faster and adapt as needed to your timelines. I’m not saying I’m always available to start straight away, but I’ll be clear about when I can begin and when I’ll finish your project by. You could have all your copy written and finalised for a brand new website in as little as three weeks. While real estate listings get turned around in 24 hours or less.

Whereas agencies sometimes over-promise and under-deliver because of shifting priorities across large teams.

5. Personalised, one-on-one service.

With an agency, you may be one of dozens (or hundreds) of clients. Depending on what you’re paying per month or the size of your business, you may not be a big priority compared to their larger accounts. It’s easy to feel like a number or to get lost in the shuffle.

Bigger agencies often rely on junior staff to do the bulk of the work, while senior staff oversee it. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with junior staff; it’s just that the agency director you had an impressive meeting with when you first signed on may not be the person doing most of your work.

Working with a freelancer over a marketing agency is a much more personal experience. If you want to know that every word and strategy is carefully crafted by someone experienced and build a long-term working relationship where your voice feels heard, working with a freelancer could be the right move for you.

I thrive on building genuine working relationships with my clients. Your wins feel like my wins, and I’m fully invested in helping your business grow while offering support and advice at every stage.

6. A multi-skilled partner.

Agencies often divide tasks between specialists — one person for copy, another for SEO, another for strategy. That can be great, but it also means lots of moving parts and a bigger price tag for you.

As a freelance marketer, copywriter, editor and SEO content writer, I wear many hats. For example, I don’t just write copy; I plan the marketing strategy behind the words first, optimise digital content for SEO keywords and then edit it for flow and polish it for accessibility. You get a versatile partner who sees the whole picture.

7. Flexible project arrangements.

Hiring an agency can feel like a big commitment. You often have to sign a contract for a minimum of three months. You may find yourself locked in a retainer agreement before you’ve worked together, or paying ongoing fees even if you’re unsatisfied with the work or service.

That said, there are a lot of awesome marketing agencies out there, so I don’t want to scare you off signing on with one if they’re the right choice for your biz. As a freelancer, I’ve often partnered with agencies, lending them an extra hand during busy times. Just make sure you do your due diligence before signing any contracts.

Freelancers can be more flexible with how we work with our clients. I offer project-based pricing rather than hourly pricing, so you’ll know the complete cost of a project (like a content strategy or writing 10 LinkedIn thought leadership posts) before we start.

I’m also happy to do one-off projects so we can see if we’re the right fit before committing to future work together. While retainers are great for both agencies and freelancers, most of my long-term clients come to me when they need to, instead of being locked into monthly fees.

8. Quality over quantity.

Agencies may be juggling dozens of accounts at once. This means that your project competes for attention, and they may not have the bandwidth to give your business (and you) the time and focus it deserves.

When you work with a freelancer vs a marketing agency, you’re not just another project on a long client list. I only take on few clients at a time, which means your biz gets the care and attention it deserves.

I also have the space to really get to know your business, your audience and your goals. That allows me to spot opportunities, adapt messaging to suit your unique brand voice, and create content that feels tailored instead of cookie-cutter.

With a freelancer, you gain a partner who genuinely understands what makes your business tick, and that insight shows up in your marketing.

9. Services tailored to YOUR needs.

Agencies often specialise in particular areas like video production, Google Ads or social media management. That’s great if those services are exactly what you need right now. But it can also mean they’ll push those offerings onto you even if they’re not the best fit for your current marketing goals.

Freelancers, on the other hand, usually specialise in a handful of areas they know inside out. In my case, that’s copywriting, content writing, marketing strategy, website copywriting and on-page SEO, plus editing and proofreading.

If I don’t think I’m the right person for your business, I won’t try to sell you services you don’t need. Instead, I’ll suggest starting with the marketing strategy that will make the biggest impact, or I’ll point you towards someone I trust who can help. The result? You get tailored support that’s focused on what your business truly needs right now.

10. Work with someone who gets you.

I work with all kinds of businesses — big and small. But many of my clients tend to be small businesses who don’t have a marketing person on staff, or who need to outsource a project because their marketing team member doesn’t have the capacity or requires a specialist service.

I know how much of a juggle it can be to balance time, budgets and big-picture goals. That small business (rather than agency) perspective means I approach every project with flexibility and empathy, tailoring my services to where you’re at right now and where you’d like your business to go.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, I’ll suggest the marketing strategies that make sense for your stage of growth, so you see value without stretching yourself (or your bank account) too thin.

Final thoughts on working with a freelancer vs a marketing agency.

Marketing agencies absolutely have their place, especially for large-scale campaigns that need lots of specialists and resources. This is not an “agencies are bad, freelancers are good” post. Rather, there are differences between us and things you need to consider before deciding between a freelancer vs a marketing agency.

It also depends on what services you need. I can do a lot for my clients, but I’m not a paid ads specialist, I don’t run Google or Meta Ads, and I don’t offer graphic design. So, you might prefer to go to an agency that offers all these services or find a trusted freelance expert or two with this set of skills.

For many growing small to medium-sized service businesses, working with a freelancer instead of an agency is often the best move. You’ll enjoy more personal attention, faster turnaround times, affordable pricing and an experienced marketing partner who can tailor their services to your needs.

At Breezy Words, I combine 15+ years of marketing and copywriting experience with a personal, flexible approach that agencies simply can’t match. Whether you need SEO-rich website copy, copywriting, engaging blog posts, marketing strategies or strategic content that connects you with your dream clients, I’d love to help.
